The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the oldest tertiary education institution in Hong Kong. 11 March 1912, marks the official opening of the University, with ArtsEngineering, Science, and Medicine as its first Faculties.

Today, HKU has 10 academic faculties that celebrate the spirit of knowledge with its passionate and diverse students, staff, and researchers. The faculties are namely, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business and Economics (HKU Business School), Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Social Sciences.

HKU is celebrating 111 years of excellence in 2022 with more than 30,000 local and international students, over 12,000 academic and non-academic staff members, and its vast alumni network across the globe.

HKU is a public research university with frontier research in critical areas through knowledge creation, translation, realisation, and impact. Its research policy is formulated to strengthen its capabilities in both fundamental and outcome-driven research and knowledge exchange within a culture that enables researchers to flourish and innovate.

Staff recruited around the region and the world are of high calibre, and are eager and active in engaging with innovative researches locally, regionally, and globally. Researchers at HKU repeatedly secure competitive government research funding, including the General Research Fund, Areas of Excellence Scheme and Theme-based Research Scheme, etc. In 2022, five outstanding research projects from the University were awarded a total funding of HKD$168 million in the 12th round of the Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS). 38 HKU researchers have been named “Highly Cited Researchers 2022” as the world’s most influential with its leading research in fields like medicine, physics, and business, etc.

With its wide range of cross-field collaborations and excellence, HKU holds a leading position in Hong Kong in regards to academic research. HKU has a proud record of academic recognition through honours and awards bestowed by bodies in Hong Kong, China, and across the world, and will continue to strive to contribute for the betterment of the local and international landscape.
