About the University of York

University of York (Picture: Adrian Kriesch)Since its founding in 1963, the University of York has become one of the brightest and the best of UK universities, excelling in teaching, research and community outreach.

York had the highest average score for Teaching Quality Assessments undertaken in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, and is now in the top 5 of UK universities for Teaching measures in the National Student Survey.

York is currently ranked 8 th in the UK for research. Those subject areas ranked first for Research in the UK include English Literature, Sociology and Health Services Research.

York is one of a handful of universities with a collegiate system. Students find the focus of their residential, social and welfare needs in College, which creates a strong community feel.

Currently undergoing a US$500 million expansion to its beautiful landscaped campus, York remains relatively small with around 12,000 students. It has a very international feel, however, with 20% of the student population and 20% of faculty from other countries.

The expansion includes a new College – Goodricke – and headquarters buildings for Computer Science, York Law School, York Management School, and the Department of Theatre, Film and Television.

The University is situated in one of Europe’s most beautiful and historic cities.
