The 8th World 100 Reputation Network Annual Conference was held at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus on 27-28 September 2018, bringing together colleagues from more than 40 institutions around the globe. Leaders in reputation gathered to hear from a range of international speakers, and discuss in depth the topic of differentiation: how can universities stand out in an increasingly competitive global environment? After a recognition that the conference was taking place on the ancestral lands of the Musqueam people…

University of Calgary Study Tour

Posted on Nov 14, 2018

Our alternative study tour to the University of Calgary literally took us to new heights as we arrived late Friday night to see the vibrant and beautiful city fringed by the Rockies. Some of us went up to Banff and Canmore to do grizzly bear hunting over the weekend and see the extravagant Chateau Louise above the azure lake (it really is very blue). We didn’t see a grizzly but we enjoyed elk singing and mountain sheep munching, and the most amazing scenery. On to the actual campus on Monday, we discovered that Calgary sits on a confluence…

The Study Tour to the University of Washington (UW), immediately prior to the W100 conference in Vancouver, proved a beneficial meeting of minds with higher education reputation leaders from around the world engaging with colleagues from one of the leading US public institutions. UW is an impressive institution in many ways, not least through the clear expression of its brand, focused around a vision to be the greatest public university in the world measured by impact. That focus on making a difference is a key part of the brand promise…

More success for World 100 members in a new ranking from Times Higher Education, this time seeking to measure teaching quality – a long overdue innovation, given the lack of education-focused metrics in the traditional global rankings. The THE Europe Teaching Ranking measures universities on 13 performance metrics covering different elements of the teaching mix; but due to challenges to accessing comparative data in different countries, it is confined to only 8 countries:  UK, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and the Republic of Ireland. 50% of an institutions’ score...

Rankings watch: ARWU Rankings – No change at the top, again…

Posted on Sep 5, 2018

The second major rankings of the season, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) produced by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy (formerly part of Shanghai Jiao Tong University), has been published. The top 10 institutions in the ARWU have remained exactly the same as in the previous year (and Harvard has been top in all 16 years of the existence of the ranking). This is no real surprise given the methodology, with a strong focus on historical achievement as well as research power; 30 % of the total score comes from alumni and academics winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. One...
